A.C. Young's Furniture Store
Nearly three years of earnest application, studying to please the people of Ardmore and vicinity is, in a general way, what Mr. Young has been doing since he begin business here. He has succeeded. It keeps one of the most thoroughly up-to-date furniture stores in Indian Territory. His carpet department will prove a revelation to those who are contemplating such a purchase. Then in furniture can be always found anything suitable for either a mansion or a humble cottage. Mr. Young's establishment, which is on the corner of Main and Court streets, is 28 by 80 ft in size, besides a gallery and the entire overhead floor. -"Good Times" edition of The Daily Ardmoreite 1899

Services for Harry Gaines, former custodian of the Carter County Courthouse, were directed by Reverend Harold Hendricks, with burial following in the Lone Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers were Willard Proctor, Reverend Alan Moore, Wallace Bailey, Lester Jordan, J.C. West and Norman Taylor. Gaines, 68, was born at Greenwood, Arkansas in 1890. Survivors include his wife, Eura.January 1935

Dewey Merritt has been found guilty of first-degree manslaughter in the death of Roscoe Bearden. A 4-foot piece of wood was the instrument used in Bearden's death. The paver below was really an honor for me to sandblast. Willie Holmes was the custodian at the Carter County Courthouse and lived an exemplary Christian life every minute of every day. The paver will go under the courthouse pavilion with the others who retired.

When I was in Healdton, Oklahoma back in 1998 I saw on the corner by the only traffic light in that town, a piece of oil field equipment cemented into the corner sidewalk. The sign next to this piece of equipment stated it was the first wellhead in this county back in 1913 when oil was struck at Healdton.

In 1949 Paul Frame wrote a thesis on Ardmore. I have read in other publications about this book, but have never seen it first hand. Now after reading the article in the July 4, 1976 Ardmoreite, I must get my hands on Mr. Frame's book. Below is a picture of Paul N. Frame and the newspaper clipping from 1976.

Butch, In this week's blog you had an old piece by Rusty talking about a movie that was filmed in McAlester. Actually, the premier of ROCK ISLAND TRAIL took place at the OKLA Theatre in McAlester in 1950 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Rock Island Railroad movie (2 hour movie). The movie, made by Republic Pictures, was opened on May 18, 1950. Forrest Tucker was the lead in the movie.
Also in last week's newsletter was a photo of the of the old iron bridge over the Washita River north of Mannsville. On the north side of the bridge is an area called Greasy Bend. Verlon Thompson who played guitar with Guy Clark the last 28 years of his life wrote a song about his mother and Greasy Bend and it appeared on Guy's album SONGS AND STORIES.

For my historic preservation, if you desire to do so, look at Duncan, Oklahoma for the Foreman Prairie House Foundation, which I established, and at the Old Duncan Library, which I wrote and put on the National Register, since my mother helped "set it up" as a Genealogy Library while I was young.
